How is an abortion performed?
In Germany, there are three methods of abortion: Surgical abortion, curettage and the abortion pill.
Surgical abortion is possible from the 5th to the 14th week of pregnancy. The foetus is aspirated under general or local anaesthetic. The abortion can be performed in surgeries and clinics. Complications rarely occur. It takes 5-10 minutes under short anaesthesia.
During a curettage, the pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus using a spoon-shaped instrument. This procedure is rarely performed. It has a higher complication rate and takes longer than the surgical procedure. Scraping is used if there is still residual tissue in the uterus after another method of termination of pregnancy.
In the third method, the abortion pill, a miscarriage is induced with medication. After taking the medication, the cervix opens and the uterus contracts. This causes a haemorrhage through which the tissue is expelled from the uterus. The abortion consists of two pills. One is taken under medical supervision. It causes the haemorrhage. The other is taken two days later. It causes heavier bleeding, often combined with abdominal cramps. A doctor then checks whether there is any residual tissue in the uterus.
