How is an abortion performed?

In Germany, there are three possible ways of an abortion: surgical termination, a scrape-out, or an abortion pill.

Surgical termination is possible from the fifth up until the 14. Week of pregnancy. The extraction of the fetus happens under general or local anesthesia. The termination can be done in practices and clinics. Complications are rare. It takes 5 to 10 minutes under short anesthesia.

During a scrape-out, the pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus with a spoon-like instrument. This procedure is only done rarely. It has a higher complication rate and takes longer than the surgical removal. The scrape-out is only done when there is still left-over pregnancy tissue in the uterus after pregnancy termination.

The third method is the abortion pill, where a miscarriage is induced by a medicament. After taking the medication, the cervix is opening and the uterus is contracting. This creates bleeding which causes the tissue to leave the uterus. The termination consists of two pills. One is taken under medical observation. This one causes the bleeding. The other is taken two days later. This one causes even stronger bleeding, often accompanied by cramps. Finally, a doctor checks if there is still tissue in the uterus.

It doesn’t matter which method: You must talk to a doctor.

In the districts Rostock and Ludwigslust-Parchim there are no known doctors.
